TFS & EPF Announce Final Q&A Competition Winner: Generative AI Takes the Lead in Climate-Smart Farming

TFS and EPF Q&A Competition winner announcement, generative AI in climate-smart farming

The Empire Partner Foundation and TFS Q&A Competition set out to do something simple and powerful: ask South Africa's youth hard questions at the intersection of technology and society, and see what answers they came back with. The final result exceeded every expectation.

The competition wrapped up with an inspiring final question that brought together three of the most urgent themes of our time, technology, youth innovation, and sustainability. Participants were asked to explore how generative AI could be applied to climate-smart farming, a question that sits at the crossroads of Africa's agricultural heritage and its digital future.

The winning response demonstrated not just technical understanding of generative AI, but a genuine grasp of the agricultural realities facing smallholder farmers in southern Africa, issues of water scarcity, unpredictable rainfall, soil degradation, and market access. The answer showed how AI could assist in crop planning, yield prediction, and resource optimisation in ways that are practical and accessible.

For EPF, the competition was about more than finding a winner. It was about creating a platform where young South Africans engage seriously with the technologies shaping their world, and demonstrate the depth of thinking that exists in our communities when the right questions are asked.

As AI continues to reshape agriculture globally, Africa cannot afford to be a passive observer. Competitions like this are how EPF is ensuring that young Africans are not just aware of these shifts, but actively contributing to the ideas that will define the continent's next chapter.
